Emotional Eating – why do we do it and how do we stop it?

Emotional eating is the act of consuming any food or beverage in excess, or when we actually wish we could resist it altogether.

Why do we do this?

Let’s first look at what society seems to accept as the reasons why, none of which are true:

Not “strong” enough to resist.

Weak. No will-power or determination.

A disgusting habit.

Runs in the family.

Too easy to access.

Media has flooded us with images and ideas that this food/beverage is a good idea.

False advertising.

All of the above “reasons” most certainly wouldn’t help the situation, but are also definitely not the cause of a person’s emotional eating.

So what is emotional eating caused by?

Emotional Eating is caused entirely by how a person is feeling and what feelings that person wishes to repress.

Our stomach/gut is our most intuitive and intelligent organ in our entire body. Yes, a lot “smarter” than our brain.

When a lack of peace of mind around something from a person’s past starts to resurface, as it inevitably will, the gut senses this in the form of emotions.

The person’s ego then senses these emotions “rising” from the gut. As a default survival mechanism, the ego then reaches for the exact food/beverage combination that will mask that very specific cocktail of emotions.

So no matter how “strong” or “determined” a person is, if the lack of peace of mind is still there brewing under the surface, the emotional eating will, without exception, continue.

The good news?

The combination of foods/beverages that you reach for during an emotional eating episode, has a very specific code.

This code, when deciphered, unlocks the exact emotions you’ve been trying to repress since childhood/early adolescence.

These emotions will be linked to certain events.

Your ego would have drawn a “child-like” or “adolescent-like” conclusion about that event, placing all of the blame, anger, disgust, shame, responsibility and guilt etc. squarely on your shoulders. Again, this is without exception.

When this conclusion and subsequent emotional cocktail has been identified, the healing can begin.

When a person decides to heal from this event, the healing is quick, painless and lasting.

How cool is that?

I did this work on myself and in the process unearthed very specific emotions around verbal, physical and psychological abuse from my childhood and adolescence.

I was able to isolate specific events by decoding my emotional eating.

I then allowed myself to heal from these events, using the techniques I use in the Freedom from Emotional Eating Course.

In the space of a few short months, I lost 10kgs, 7.5 cm off my chest, 11.5cm off my waist, 6cm from my hips, 5cm off my thighs, and 3 dress sizes.

I went from uncontrollable eating of carbs and chocolate to complete freedom from emotional eating. And I haven’t regressed, which is the most profound and wonderful outcome!

So, until the core emotions are acknowledged, addressed and healed, the emotional eating will persist.

No diet, exercise program, fasting, de-toxing or surgery will remove the real problem.

Kylie's Freedom from Emotional Eating journey

I've lost 10kgs, 7.5 cm off my chest, 11.5cm off my waist, 6cm from my hips, 5cm off my thighs, and 3 dress sizes in the space of 4 months.

How did I do this?

I healed myself from my past.

Even though I thought I’d dealt with my childhood and adolescence after 44 years in this incarnation, it very quickly became apparent, as I started to do this work, that I hadn’t even touched the surface.

And this is why I was still holding onto so much weight.

I had been a Reiki Master and Dru Yoga teacher for several years. I had done an immeasurable amount of self-healing, and had called upon several Reiki practitioner friends to also assist me with my healing. I had done seemingly mountains of releasing, letting go, forgiving, moving on and what looked like thorough healing processes.

But the weight was still there.

What was I still holding onto?

The first emotion that was driving me to emotionally eat was FEAR.

I discovered that my ego was still petrified of making a mistake, or forgetting something, because from my ego’s point of view (which is just a child version of myself), this would equate to physical abuse (being flogged), emotional abuse (being terrorised – the torment leading up to the punishment), psychological abuse (being told that I’m not good enough, that I have failed, and that I must be punished – a profound rejection), neglect (being forced to recover from the abuse alone) and loss (having friends and potential lovers forcefully removed from my life by the abuser).

Forgetting things or making a mistake also led to public humiliation, extreme verbal abuse and a significant attack on my sense of self-worth, self-love and self-esteem.

When these fears started to surface, I would eat carbs to feel comfort and security.

The second emotion was ANGER.

And boy, was I angry!

I thought I had released all of the anger associated with my childhood abuse because I seemed to be “OK” with those who had inflicted the abuse.

But when I looked more closely, I was still placing all of the anger about what happened to me, squarely on my own shoulders.

Strange as this may seem, my ego was angry at me for forgetting things, for making mistakes, and for not “knowing better” – not being able to read people’s emotions and what was the ”right” thing to do, at the age of 5, 8 and 12 years.

My ego had believed all of the stories my abusers had made up about me – that I was wrong, forgetful, stupid, embarrassing and that I absolutely deserved every bit of punishment I received, be it physical or verbal abuse, neglect, public humiliation or loss of love, security or health.

I discovered that I still held deep seated RAGE towards my mother, and ANGER towards my father.

And to cover this up, to prevent this RAGE from coming to the surface, I would turn the anger inward, get depressed, and then eat dairy to ease the depression, and salty foods to put out the fire.

And so, the weight remained.

The third emotion was TENSION.

This was directly associated with the fear of making a mistake, of getting it wrong, of forgetting something, putting someone out, or looking stupid.

The anxiety and tension was acute because most of the time, my punishment was:

-Delayed (I had to wait…anticipating the inevitable pain),

-Unavoidable (no matter how “good” a girl I was – no matter how hard I tried to do the right thing – a story would be made up about me, I would be “dobbed in” for something I hadn’t done, or my abusers just felt like lashing out at someone for no apparent reason),

-Unjust (the punishment never fitted the “crime” and most of the time I was wrongly accused),

-Unpredictable (I never knew when it was coming because there was no correlation between what I did, and what I was abused for).

I vividly remember lying in bed most nights, as stiff as a board, having recurring nightmares, and feeling flooded with tension and anxiety – “when will they come and get me?”

By the time I started to menstruate, my anxiety had grown out of control. As a result, my very high cortisol and adrenal levels messed with my oestrogen and progesterone levels, and so my periods were horrific. They were so bad that I was put on the pill to stop the extreme bloating, pain, PMS and unpredictable bleeds (sometimes every two weeks – sometimes not for months). I also experienced spontaneous diarrhoea whenever I got nervous. I was 12 years old.

Even though I had worked very hard on lowering my anxiety and tension levels through Yoga, Reiki, Meditation and Relaxation (which was all fantastic), the weight remained.

The fourth and final emotion I was holding onto was SHAME.

This one was the best hidden from my conscious self.

After looking very closely, I realised that I was holding onto profound shame about my “behaviour” as a child. My ego decided that I was the crazy one, the embarrassing one, the idiot, the fool, the forgetful and careless, the selfish, insensitive and the unjust. Despite endless evidence to the contrary.

I blamed myself for all of my actions, non-actions, and words that resulted in punishment, from my childhood.

Logically, to the conscious mind, this makes no sense.

A child will make mistakes, will forget things, will say silly things, and will sometimes even test the boundaries.

The parent educates the child, guides them, nurtures them, supports them with their development, and makes them feel safe to express how they’re feeing – their fears, confusion, worries and even their anger. The parent also demonstrates emotional balance, fair, just and consistent parenting and healthy relationships.

At least this is what is supposed to happen.

When a person in a child’s life doesn’t respond to a child’s behaviour in this manner, and chooses to only punish them instead, this is, without exception, abuse.

And so, before I could release the weight, I had to release the fear of being punished/ abused, the anger at myself, the tension (anticipating the abuse) and the shame (blaming myself).

I let the feelings come to the surface, I transferred the blame and anger back to the abusers, released all resentment towards them (this is a very important and crucial step), and then I released the emotions.

This was simple, easy, and painless.

And once it was done, it never came back. The emotional eating stopped, and the kilos fell off.

I still have a way to go as I know there’s more of these emotions hidden in there, because I’m still over weight. But now that I have the tools and the insight, I can de-code what’s holding the kilos on, enable these events/emotions to surface, and then release these emotions when they surface in a safe and effective way.

New Year's Resolutions and how to make them stick!

New Year’s Resolutions – how to make them stick!

Lose weight, de-clutter, spend less, get fit or get organised.

Quit smoking, drinking, complaining, or procrastinating.

Get some “me time”, work-life balance, or financial security.

Learn a new skill or language, travel, or improve the appearance of your body, home, work space, or car.

Sound familiar?

Most of us have made a New Year’s resolution at least once in our lives, but according to statistics, as few as 1 in 10 of us succeed!

Why is this so? Is it the resolution? Or our mindset? A lack of determination/ will power/time/energy/money? Or is it something else?

In short, it’s definitely something else.

Acknowledging that we need to make a change, resolving to change it, and being really determined about making that change, generally lasts for about 2 – 6wks (depending on how much time and energy we have available to put into being determined/”strong” about each resolve).

In the end, if we’ve only consciously decided we want to change, nothing changes.

We just continue the vicious circle of resolution and failure, and grow more and more resentful, angry and frustrated.

So what’s missing? How do we make it stick?

You can make any resolution you like, and it will be successful if you have first successfully resolved the following four crucial pre-resolution steps:

  1. What’s the root of your bad habit/addiction that you wish to resolve?

Bad habits don’t just appear out of thin air. And not everyone has the same bad habits.

Some people are addicted to chocolate, while others can walk away from chocolate but can’t go past the carbs. Some people are addicted to sex, while others abstain and might be addicted to work or fitness instead. Some of us are addicted to retail therapy, while others might hold onto their money and turn their attention to other addictions like Facebook.

Your bad habit/addiction has manifested from your own thoughts and feelings, and an acute lack of peace of mind around a very specific thing. In short, your current reality is not in line with your soul’s purpose/desires.

Every bad habit/addiction has a code.

Chocoholics generally crave ecstasy/ romantic love, while carb addicts generally crave comfort.

Sex addicts generally crave love/ acknowledgment/ comfort/ a sense of being alive – feeling something, and belonging.

Workaholics and gym “junkies” are generally keeping themselves “busy” and seek external “results” to boost the ego and avoid the real issues (that lack of peace of mind).

Retail Therapy addicts have turned their attention to over-purchasing to feel empowered, rewarded, in control, or loved.

Facebook addiction again is a diversion from the real issues, and it’s also a “safe” way to interact with other people when someone fears social awkwardness.

This is a very general overview of a few examples that in isolation are easy to psycho-analyse. The deep root of a person’s addictions/habits however, can be a lot more complex and specific to that individual’s history and personality.

The good news is that every addiction/bad habit has a cause embedded in the individual’s subconscious which can be easily read like a code.

Once this cause is identified by the recipient, it loses it momentum and can be reprogrammed very easily using affirmation recordings.

  1. What do you really think you deserve?

A bad habit/addiction stays around not only due to the above mentioned root cause, fuelled by repetitive subconscious thoughts and feelings, but also due to a substantial lack of self-esteem, self-love and self-worth, and an incapacity to receive.

Again, this toxic and very well hidden self-talk can be easily reprogrammed using affirmation recordings.

  1. What’s your true motivation for the resolution?

Most New Year’s Resolutions are made in order to achieve external outcomes.

We resolve to lose weight so we “fit in”, not just into our clothes, but into society, into our family, into the human race. So we feel loved by someone, or so we can “feel good” about ourselves.

The same goes for all of the other “socially unacceptable conditions” like alcoholism, tobacco smoking, drug addiction, gambling etc.

Or we may resolve to “clean up our act” with other bad habits like procrastination, financial troubles, relationship issues, poor lifestyle etc. due to a fear-based and ego-based external factor. This external factor may be the threat of losing your job, your family, your partner, your reputation, people’s respect or loyalty, or indeed the fear of being poor, or ill, or dying prematurely.

In short, all of the above mentioned external factors set the resolution up for failure from the get go!

The only way any change can be lasting is if the motivation comes from within, and not from without.

I choose this healthy meal because I love myself exactly as I am and so wish to nourish and nurture my body.

I choose to release the need for tobacco because I deeply love and respect myself and wish to experience freedom and space in my life.

I choose my partner because I fully love and accept myself as I am, and so fully love and accept all that they are.

When a change comes from a place of self-love, self-worth, self-acceptance, and from a place of being comfortable with receiving, the change comes fast and lasts as long as you choose it to. This can all be easily re-programmed with affirmation recordings.

When a change/resolution is initiated from a place of wanting to please others, or to feel accepted and loved by others, it will always, in the end, without exception, fail.


  1. What’s going on for you energetically?

The preparation for a successful resolution is threefold (The Triad of Healing).

All three parts need to be undertaken until a positive result is achieved.

If only one or two are done, then the result will only be temporary.

Firstly – uncover the deeply hidden root cause of your upset/ lack of peace of mind (crack the code deciphered from your Numerology, cravings, habits and addictions). Become aware of it, and start to catch yourself out when it pops up.

Secondly – reprogram your ego/subconscious based on this cause, which can in essence, be found in your full Numerology chart.

Thirdly – remove the upset/ lack of peace of mind from all of the layers of your body (your Koshas). These are your Physical, Energetic, mental and emotional, intellectual and blissful bodies. This can be done using Yoga (particularly Dru Yoga, Reiki, Shiatsu Massage, Cranial Saccral Therapy, and Accupuncture etc.)

The Triad of Healing has proven to be extremely successful in resolving all kinds of issues for my clients for many years. The personalised affirmation recordings I provide, in particular, are extremely powerful in transforming a person’s “stuck-ness” into action in a very short period of time.

And so why don’t I have thousands of people banging down my door, and filling my inbox with requests for these affirmations? If it’s that simple and inexpensive, why isn’t everyone doing it?

In short, a person will choose to not heal from their lack of peace of mind/ upset due to a deep seated fear, which comes from attachment.

This may be attachment to a relationship, a way of being, money, security, having someone else around to “blame” or look “less” than themselves (avoidance of guilt/grief), or avoidance of emotional/physical pain.

A healing journey is a very personal experience, and can only happen when that individual chooses to release the need to be stuck. The best thing you can do for yourself and your loved ones is to accept where you and your loved ones are, and release the need to “change” yourself or others “right now”. Accept the process and accept that healing will happen in the fullness of time for you and all those you love. Maybe in this lifetime, or in lifetimes to come.

We’re all Spiritual beings having a Human experience.

When given the time and space to awaken, acknowledge, re-program and act, miracles happen.

We're finally going to do an evening focused on meditation! YAY! :)

(I've only been talking about doing this for about 6 months :P )

And this will most likely become a regular Friday night event!

(Most likely every second or fourth Friday - depending on the feeling of the group).

So....this is what we will do:

The first 90 mins, we will go through a sequence of simple yet very effective techniques that allow your body and mind to be in the most optimum state for meditation. 

And once your mind is cleared of the clutter (stress/ anxiety/ overthinking) from your week, and your body is relaxed and restful, we will do a 30 minute meditation.

And you don't have to have any previous experience at meditation (or yoga) to participate in this evening. 

This is completely suitable for beginners.

After the meditation, we will have a light supper and sit back down to share our experiences, and engage in a bit of a question and answer session (about anything yoga/healing/meditation/pranayam/personal development) for about an hour.

The first Meditation Evening is Friday 18th Dec from 6:30pm - 9:30pm in my home yoga studio at 3 Shumack st. Weetangera.
